The capital of Western Armenia, Karin, is located in the southeastern part of Erzrum, at the headwaters of the Euphrates and Yeraskh, about 4 km northeast of the Aitsptkunk ridge. The battle of one of the most important centers of Western Armenia-Karin (Erzrum) took place between the Turkish army and the troops of the Caucasian Front of the Russian army from January 10 to February 16, 1916. The Caucasian army of Russia defeated the third Turkish field army and occupied the strategically important city of Karin, thereby opening the way deep into the territory of the Ottoman Empire.
