The Kharberd Fortress is located in the Kharberd region of Western Armenia. The fortress was founded in the Urartian period, in the IX-VIII centuries. In ancient times, it was part of the Tsopk of Akhdzniq Province of Greater Armenia. In 1236, the fortress was conquered by the Mongols. Later , the fortress was under the rule of Lenk Temur․ 

In 1507, the army of Shah Ismail I (1502-1524) invaded Kharbert, plundered and destroyed it. In 1515, Kharbert was ruled by the Ottoman Sultan Selim I the Terrible (1512-1520). In 1617, Kharberd was completely destroyed. In 1834, with a new administrative division, it became part of the Tigranakert. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Turkish barbarians destroyed the fortress, using stones to build government buildings in Mezir.
