Haykaberd is located in the Armenian province of Vaspurakan of Western Armenia, south of the city of Van, in the valley of the Khoshab River, which flows into Lake Van. According to historian Movses Khorenatsi, the fortress was founded by Hayk Nahapet. According to another testimony, the founder of the fortress is considered to be the king of Urartu Sarduri II ( 764-735BC).
