The destroyed Armenian Apostolic Monastery complex of St. Stepanos Nakhavka was built in the village of Astapat, Babek district, on the left bank of the Araks River on top of a rocky hill. The monastery was known by several names: the Monastery of St. Stepanos Nakhavka, Red Monastery, Karataki Monastery and Astapat Monastery. It was located on the territory of Astapat village in Nakhichevan province of Vaspurakan province of Western Armenia. The monastery of St. Stepanos in Astapat was one of the few monuments that was measured and presented also in the pre-theoretical professional literature.
