The Azerbaijani Armed Forces are constantly strengthening in the mountainous regions of the Syunik region of Armenia. After the 44-day war, Baku occupied more than 45 square kilometers of territory on the Sotk-Khoznavar  (from Gegharkunik to Syunik). These are the official data. In a recent statement, the Foreign Ministry said that since May 2021, the Azerbaijani Armed Forces on the Sotk-Khoznavar section “illegally invaded the sovereign territory of the Republic of Armenia and occupied more than 45 square kilometers of territory.” However, Azerbaijani units invaded not only the Sotk–Khoznavar section. Their progress is noticeable and officially established in the area of the village of Nerkin Hand and further south of it on the Vardasar hill. The calculations were made based on satellite photos and Google Earth and Sentinel UB tools. According to some estimates, in this part of Syunik, the territory of Armenia with an area of about 9 km (approximately 900 hectares) is under the direct control of Azerbaijan. However, it should be taken into account that the Azerbaijani positions are located at dominant heights, which makes it possible to see a much larger territory.
