Pirtukan Fortress is located near the village of Tekevler in the south of Sasun, on the slope of Mount Helkiz. The fortress is now in a ruined state. The ruined walls show that it used to be a castle. At the beginning of the IV century, the Byzantines founded numerous self-defense fortresses in the Sasun, Kozluk, and Bitlis for self-defense and neutralization of enemy attacks. Pirtukan fortress, located 4 km south of Sasun Province, was also one of them. During the Byzantine period, the Pirtukan fortress, like other fortresses, provided control over this region of the Silk Road leading from East to West. It is said that recently the villagers have also encountered finds that could belong to the prehistoric era.
