Seda Melikian

I was born in 1946, my parents are Armenian, with roots from different provinces of Western Armenia: on my father’s side it is Artsakh, on my mother’s side it is Hamshe and Karin.

I graduated from the Faculty of Biology of Yerevan State University.

In 1972-1995 I worked as a socio-psychologist at the Research Institute of General Hygiene and Occupational Diseases, I published 42 scientific papers. I passed the preliminary defense of the scientific thesis, but due to the closure of the scientific council in the 90s, I did not defend my thesis.

In 1983 I became a member of the Union of Psychologists of the USSR attached to the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.

In 1990-2005 I worked as a researcher in the Department of Research on the National Liberation Struggle of the National Ethnographic Museum of Armenia, conducting a number of exhibitions, among which I would like to mention: The exhibition dedicated to ASALA, which was held for the first time in Armenia.

Following the closure of scientific research institutes in 1997 – 2015 I taught in several universities at the same time, teaching sociology and psychology as my main specialty.

I have been involved in social and political activities since the Artsakh movement. I have been co-chair of the NGO Spiritual Armenia, executive director of the NGO Lawyers for Human Rights, managed a number of research projects, including one in 2001. I have always been a culture expert for the United Nations Human Development Program.

I have been actively involved in a number of high-profile public actions and advocacy trials, most notably the Mataghis trial, which we won both in Yerevan and before the ECHR, freeing three innocent soldiers from life imprisonment.

In 1993, I began to study the socio-psychological character of Freedom Fighter. The program was implemented first in Artsakh, during the first Artsakh war, and then in detachments stationed in Yerevan and various locations in the Republic of Armenia.

In 1997, Vahan Ishkhanyan, a founding member of the Armenian Helsinki Committee, started for the first time in Armenia to protect the rights of soldiers who died in peaceful conditions and their relatives.

In 2009, I became an expert of the Group of Public Observers of Penitentiary Institutions of the Ministry of Justice of RA.

In the 2000s, I became a founding member of a public initiative for the Army.

I also participated in the parliamentary and presidential elections of Armenia as a member or head of pre-election headquarters of opposition parties.

In 2007, with Zaruhi Postanjyan, I entered the Parliament as a deputy and until 2018. In May, I was active in political activities, I participated in drafting several bills and reports of PACE.

In 2018, I stopped my social and political activity in the Republic of Armenia.

In December2018, I participated in the elections to the National Assembly of the Republic of Western Armenia and was elected as a deputy and then as a deputy chairman of the National Assembly until April 2020, after which I enjoyed the great confidence of the President of the Republic of Western Armenia. I was elected to the post of President of the Republic of Armenia, Mr. Armenak Abrahamyan, and was appointed Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia and to this day I perform my duties with great honor and responsibility.

Since 2008, I am honored and proud to bear the high title of citizen of the Republic of Western Armenia.

From December 2023 onwards, my other activities will be aimed at the various works carried out together with millions of our compatriots living in Western Armenia and the final liberation of our occupied homeland, the realization of which I ask not only to Mr. Armenag Abrahamian, who has given all his strength and energy since 2004 and contributed to this holy cause and, achieving great success, having opened for us the path traced by Poghos Nubar and whose marker we all must carry in our hearts, but also the support and active participation of all of you.

I hope and trust that we will become the team that will carry forward together the thoughts of Poghos Nubar and Armenag Abrahamian and each of us. So, from now on, we will put aside our personal interests and dedicate ourselves to this holy work, which has only one name: PATRIA.
