The Mother Fortress

Askeran Fortress is located about 14 km from Stepanakert, which is surrounded on both sides by the valley of the Karkar River. It is also known as Mayraberd.

The solid defensive structure of the fort is particularly remarkable. The fort is fortified with double walls and has high circular towers. Askeran fortress consists of two departmental sets: the left side – northwest and the right side – southeast. The castle walls are 2 m thick and 9 m high. The towers, which serve as observation points, are connected to each other by narrow corridors.

Askeran existed as a barracks since the middle of the 18th century. It played an important role in the defense of Shushi. The fort was heavily damaged during the Artsakh wars.
