WESTERN ARMENIA – The handing of the International Peace Treaty to Turkey on May 11, 1920, and the de jure recognition of the Republic of Armenia by the United States Senate in the territory of Western Armenia.
The ceremony for the presentation of the Peace Treaty to the Turkish delegation took place on Tuesday at 16:00. at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Paris in the presence of the Armenian delegation, since the new Armenian state was one of the parties to the Treaty and additional protocols.
Let us remind in the preface:
Considering that the Main Allied Powers have recognized Armenia as a sovereign and independent state.
The Treaty prepared at the London Conference in February 1920 and finalized within the framework of the San Remo Conference on April 24, 1920 was delivered for signature to the Ottoman Government on May 11, 1920.
The conditions that the Allies handed over to Turkey through Mr. Millerand were known in advance. They are harsh, but deserved, and they could have been harder still, since there had been talk of taking Constantinople from the Turks and thus pushing back the seat of their government in Asia.
No one feels sorry for them, all this is a small atonement for their sins against the Armenians and other Christian peoples in the face of the 1915 massacre.
Mr. Millerand presided over the ceremony, Mr. de Fouquières chief of protocol introduced the delegates of the Ottoman Empire, Mr. Millerand on behalf of the Allies gave them the draft of the Treaty. The powers have decided that the discussions will take place in writing form, and the Ottoman government will be given one month to make known its observations.
Tewfik Pacha, shaking his hands from the newly obtained document, answered a few words in a voice distracted by the excitement.
Mr. Millerand postponed the five-minute meeting.
