The Armenian Hogyats or Hogvots (Ter Mariam) monastery complex located in the Gurpinar (Hayots Dzor) district of Van is almost razed to the ground today.
According to the legend, the tombs of the Armenian king Trdat and his wife are located in the territory of the monastic complex. In the 4th century, leprosy was treated here. According to another legend, Virgin Hripsime lived in this monastery, during which time the building served as a convent.
The monastery is located in an area that has often been the scene of wars. Later, the historical structure regularly suffered from those wars, today only a few half-ruined walls of the former complex are left.
