The mosaics found during illegal excavations in Derik, Mardin province of Western Armenia turn out to belong to a 1624-year-old basilica-style church.

The area of the discovered mosaics has been declared a specially protected area, and rescue excavations have begun here.

During the excavations, a mosaic-based church was found, where there are carvings with images of humans and animals, geometric and floral motifs, as well as 9-line Estrangelo (Old Assyrian) carvings.
