President of Russia Vladimir Putin admits that he didn’t understand why Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan renounced Azerbaijan’s condition for the return of peaceful refugees to the city of Shushi, TASS reported.
According to Putin, the issue of Shushi was raised during the conflict. “On 19-20 October, I held phone talks with President Aliyev and Prime Minister Pashinyan. At that time, the Armed Forces of Azerbaijan had taken control over several territories in southern Nagorno-Karabakh. Overall, I managed to convince President Aliyev that the fighting can be stopped, but his mandatory condition was the return of refugees, including to the city of Shushi.
What surprised me was the position of Russia’s Armenian colleagues who didn’t accept this, and Prime Minister Pashinyan directly told me that this posed a threat to Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh. I still don’t understand what the threat was, taking into consideration the presence of Russian peacekeepers. Pashinyan told me that the Armenian side would fight. This is why certain statements on betrayal on his part are groundless,” Putin said.
