Karapet (Garo) Kahkejian was born in Aleppo, Syria. He moved to Germany in 1978 to study architecture at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the Frankfurt Engineering University. He then settled in Fresno, California. During the years he lived in Lebanon, he took part in the self-defense battles in the Armenian district of Beirut.

He came to Armenia to help during the Spitak earthquake in 1988 . He formed  the ‘‘Crusaders detachment’’  together with Shahe Achemyan. 

In 1991-1993 he took part in the self-defense and liberation battles of Ararat, Tavush, Askeran, Martakert, Karvachar regions of Artsakh, Berdadzor subregion. During the liberation of the “Pushkenyal” hill, before the attack of the main forces, he fought with his detachment against the forces of the enemy, defended the hill and died in the battle.

His body is buried in Yerablur, where his monument is erected.
