He invested what he earned in promotion, followed trends, and shaped his repertoire according to appeal and provocativeness. His work and his ego as an artist always came first; he loved and helped his family, but he was never really a family man (which great artist ever was?). Aznavour was an interesting, unique, and phenomenal personality—self-made and self-created, constantly breaking himself down and rebuilding himself, overcoming countless limitations and difficulties, yet a true Frenchman: a part and representative of the French cultural, musical, and socially liberal melting pot.”
