On 13 June, 2025, historian Zhirayr Shushanyan presented a remarkable article on the Asbarez.am website dedicated to the fate of the last queen of the Armenian Kingdom of Kilikia, the Frenchwoman Margaret of Soissons.

Margaret of Soissons was from a French noble family. In 1374, she became the Queen of the Armenians of Kilikia by marrying King Levon V. Their coronation ceremony took place in Sis. The couple had a daughter named Mari. However, the following year, as a result of the Mamluk attack, they were captured and taken to Egypt.

Although King Levon was later released through the intervention of the King of Castile and moved to Spain, his wife Margaret and daughter Mari died in Kahire  in 1381, at the age of 41 and 11, respectively.

Historian Artashes Gartashyan, in his book “Materials for the History of the Armenians of Egypt,” presents data that Queen Margaret is most likely buried in the church St. Martinos in Kahire  next to the Chapel of St. Minas. This opinion is also confirmed by the notes made by the Italian traveler Frescobaldi during his visit in 1384.

Although excavations were carried out near the Chapel of St. Minas in 1880 by the Venetian monk Father Jacobos Isaverdents, the tomb was never found. To this day, the burial place of the queen and her daughter remains unknown.

This story is a reminder that there are still undiscovered pages in Armenian history that continue to excite and inspire Armenian historians and researchers.
