On the territory of Western Armenia, near the ancient city of Nicaea, archaeologists have discovered the ruins of an early Christian church beneath the waters of Lake Iznik that may be connected to the First Council of Nicaea, held in 325.

The structure was first discovered in 2014 and is currently being studied by specialists. According to archaeologists’ hypothesis, it may have existed as early as the beginning of the 4th century and may have been connected to gatherings of participants in the Council.

However, independent experts note that the discovery does not yet provide sufficient evidence to definitively establish the location where the Council was held. Archaeological research is continuing.
