Hovik Avanesov, the Ombudsman for Cultural Heritage of Artsakh, has reported that the latest target of Azerbaijani vandalism is the cemetery of fallen freedom fighters in the village of Vaghuhas in the occupied Martakert region of Artsakh.

A video circulating on social media shows broken and damaged gravestones bearing Armenian inscriptions and images of the fallen fighters, indicating the deliberate destruction of Armenian memory and cultural heritage.

According to Avanesov, this is not only vandalism but also a manifestation of ethnic hatred, psychological pressure, and a gross violation of international humanitarian law. The video has not been published in order not to distress the relatives of the deceased, but it is preserved as evidence.

He also recalled that in 2024 Azerbaijani soldiers destroyed a khachkar erected in memory of Mkitar Aghabekyan in Vaghuhas.

According to the Ombudsman, dozens of similar cases in Artsakh already testify to a systematic policy aimed at the destruction of Armenian cultural heritage.
