Lake Childir, located between the Akhbyurik district of Kars and the Childir district of Ardahan, has once again become an important stop for migratory birds with the arrival of spring. Although most of the lake is still covered with ice, it is already hosting numerous bird species, creating a unique natural landscape.
Located on the plateau of Western Armenia, Lake Childir is the region’s second-largest freshwater lake after Lake Van and lies at an altitude of approximately 1,959 meters above sea level. Seagulls from Lake Van, crested grebes, wild geese, mallards, coots, and other water birds have been observed in the lake and on its six islands.
According to local residents, the melting of the ice has been delayed this year due to the cold weather and the absence of warm southern winds. Normally, the melting process begins in the second half of March, but this year it has not yet fully concluded.
Lake Childir continues to remain one of the region’s important ecological centers, transforming into a true “paradise for birds” during the spring months.
