Gtchavank, as the medieval political and spiritual center of Artsakh, is located near the village of Togh, on the northeastern side of the mountain, in dense forests.

The monastery, famous since the early Middle Ages, was destroyed in the 7th century, during the Arab period, and rebuilt again in the 13th century.

In the 18th century, with the help of Melik Yegan of Dizak, the territory of the monastery was expanded.

From an architectural point of view, the complex of the Gtchavank Monastery is one of the most interesting monuments of the secular Armenian culture.
