The Treaty of Sèvres, signed on August 10, 1920, provided for the territorial and political reorganization of the Ottoman Empire and the establishment of a new order in the Middle East.

One of the important provisions of the treaty concerned the determination of the border between Armenia and Turkey. It was stipulated that the border would be determined through an international legal mechanism, and U.S. President Woodrow Wilson would make the corresponding decision regarding the provinces of Erzurum, Trabzon, Van, and Bitlis.

The Treaty of Sèvres aimed to resolve post-war territorial disputes, limit the military capabilities of the Ottoman Empire, and establish mechanisms of international oversight.

The Treaty of Sèvres remains one of the most important documents in the history of the international legal system established after the First World War and of the Armenian-Turkish border issue.
