St. George Church, one of the very few Armenian churches still standing in Sebastia, is currently in need of preservation and restoration. Built by the Armenian community of Sebastia in the 19th century, the church is also referred to in historical sources as St. Sarkis Church. For a period, it was also used by the local Greek community and was later converted into a military warehouse by the Turkish Armed Forces.
In 2016, the Turkish authorities approved a restoration project for the church and announced the beginning of restoration work. However, nearly ten years later, the restoration has still not been carried out. The plan is to restore the church to its historical appearance and include it in tourism programs.
