On the initiative of Armenian Students of Leuven (ASL), a conference titled "Commemorating the Genocide against Armenians, referring to the historical memory in today's context" was held, the main speakers of which were the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Eastern Armenia to Belgium, the representative of Armenia in the EU, Tigran Balayan. , Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Belgian Federal Parliament, Els van Hoff, and Nikola Davityan, a senior specialist in the protection of the interests of political society.

The purpose of the conference was to draw parallels between the historical past experienced by the Armenian people and current developments.

Mariam Harutyunyan, the founder of the "Leuven Armenian Students" organization, noted in her opening speech that the history of the Armenian people is complex, but it is often not told on a large scale. That's why they wanted this year's event to be different and for student participation to be multi-layered.

According to Mariam Harutyunyan, the main purpose of the event was to educate the Armenian youth on how they can get involved in the process, to show them the different ways  the speakers were chosen on this very basis.

Ambassador Balayan highlighted such initiatives in his speech, not only from the point of view of conveying a message, but also from the point of view of listening to criticism. According to the permanent representative of Armenia in the EU, it is important to hold such events in Brussels, because Brussels has become an important place for Armenia. The ambassador hopes that it will continue to be so in the coming decades.

"A hundred years later, we again witnessed another series of atrocities against Armenians, which ended with ethnic cleansing. This once again showed that the mentality of impunity drives the forces to carry out such atrocities", emphasized Ambassador Balayan, noting that presenting Armenians as enemies helps the Azerbaijani regime to maintain its power.

Tigran Balayan emphasized drawing parallels between the past and the present. According to him, the reason for the current reality is the lack of critical thinking since 1994 and not noticing how the realities are changing.
