European Commission spokesperson Christian Wiegand stated that he would clarify the circumstances surrounding EU Special Representative Magdalena Grono’s post on X regarding Artsakh’s cultural heritage.

Wiegand noted that he was not personally familiar with the content of Grono’s comments and that the matter would need to be examined.

Following a visit organized by Azerbaijan, Grono wrote that there were “deeply divergent views and narratives” between Armenia and Azerbaijan regarding the origins of certain cultural sites in Artsakh. Her post drew criticism because, during the visit, Armenian churches and monasteries had been presented by the Azerbaijani side as “Caucasian Albanian” heritage.
