Israel, under pressure from Azerbaijan, removed the issue of recognition of the Genocide committed against Armenians from the Knesset agenda. As Haaretz has learned, Israeli officials assured their Azerbaijani counterparts that the matter would be removed from the Knesset’s agenda.

An Israeli source stated that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu personally blocked the vote after a senior political adviser to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, Hikmet Hajiyev, contacted his office.

The source added that the Israeli government’s decision recognizing the Genocide committed against Armenians , approved last month, was not brought to a vote in the Knesset due to pressure exerted by Azerbaijan on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

On June 28, 2026, Israel’s Cabinet of Ministers unanimously recognized the Genocide committed against Armenians. However, the subsequent Knesset vote required for the decision to become official state policy was removed from the agenda under Azerbaijani pressure. Due to the Knesset’s recess and the elections scheduled for October 27, the issue is unlikely to be resolved in the near future, remaining a reversible government resolution rather than established state policy.
