Iran’s military has announced that the Iranian Navy’s frigate “Dena” was sunk following a U.S. attack, resulting in the deaths of 104 sailors, while 32 others sustained injuries of varying severity.
According to Iran’s PressTV agency, the incident occurred on Wednesday in international waters, hundreds of miles from the Persian Gulf combat zone, near the southern coast of Sri Lanka. According to the Iranian military, the ship was torpedoed and sunk by a U.S. submarine.
It is reported that the IRIS “Dena” frigate was returning to Iran from an eastern Indian port after participating in the multinational naval exercise “Milan-2026.” Iranian authorities claim that the vessel was unarmed and that the attack was carried out without warning, violating international maritime law and humanitarian norms.
Official reports state that there were 136 people aboard the ship: 104 were killed, 32 were wounded, and another 20 sailors are considered missing. The injured were transported to hospitals in Sri Lanka.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi wrote on social media that the United States will “deeply regret” this action. According to him, the Iranian vessel was attacked in international waters approximately 2,000 miles from Iran’s coastline.
The incident has once again heightened tensions in the region amid an already ongoing large-scale military conflict.
