A new Supreme Leader has been chosen in Iran. The Assembly of Experts of the Islamic Republic of Iran, consisting of 88 members elected by the people, has appointed Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei as the new leader by a majority vote.
According to the official announcement, he has become the third Supreme Leader of Iran, replacing his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed as a result of strikes carried out by the United States and Israel. The council stated that Ali Khamenei “accepted a hero’s death, fulfilling his duty to the Iranian people until the end.”
According to analysts, he maintains close ties with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which may strengthen his political position. In recent days it was also reported that he had been wounded during Israeli-American strikes.
