“Baku is a country that does not respect human rights and international law.

That country has only a poor  score of 7 out of 100 points from the Freedom House organization.

The former vice-president of the UN “Global Compact” treaty, Paul Polman emphasized in  his article.

The article was published in the British “Express” periodical.

He noted that since 2003, when Ilham Aliyev inherited the presidency from his father, corruption  developed  in that country, civil liberties were destroyed and political opposition crushed, leaving no opportunity for free expression or civic activism. “Journalists are persecuted, in  case if they resist, they end up in prison. Those who leave the country, their families are persecuted,” wrote he in the article.

After a ten-month total blockade, which deprived the local population of food, fuel and basic medical supplies, Baku forced more than 100,000 Armenians to flee their homes.

It was called  as genocide.

They  emphasize that just one year after the aggression unleashed by Baku, in November of this year, that country is preparing to host the COP29 UN Climate Change Summit in its capital city.  The fact that Baku was chosen as the host city, according to Paul Polman, is already highly controversial, since almost half of the country’s GDP and 90 percent of its export earnings come from oil and gas production.

They point out that the country’s president has no serious interest in struggling against climate change or reducing emissions. “Representatives of the government of that country claim that they want this summit to be a “Peace Summit”.

And this is in the case that not even a year has passed since they invaded the neighboring country and they have not yet reached the adoption of a fair peace agreement, nor have they shown any real intention to move in that direction,” the article states.

According to him, more and more governments in the world are expressing their anger about Baku’s behavior.

He hopes that the newly appointed British Foreign Secretary, David Lemmy, will add his voice to these growing “voices” given his commitment to human rights.

In the end, Paul Polman emphasizes that the UN should demand Baku to release all Armenian prisoners before the COP29 summit.

and also review the selection procedure of future host countries.
