U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to halt all trade with Spain after Madrid banned the United States from using military bases located on its territory for operations against Iran.

During a meeting with journalists at the White House, Trump stated that Spain had “behaved terribly” and emphasized that he is ready to “stop everything related to Spain — even today.” According to him, Washington could legally impose restrictions on goods imported from Spain.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also noted that such measures could be implemented on legal grounds.

Trump also criticized the Spanish authorities for failing to meet the requirement within NATO to increase defense spending to 5 percent of GDP.

In response, the Spanish government stated that any review must be carried out within the framework of international law, the autonomy of private companies, and the agreements currently in force between the European Union and the United States. Earlier, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez described the strikes by the United States and Israel against Iran as “unjustified and dangerous military intervention.”
