Months before Hrant Dink’s assassination, Turkish law enforcement authorities had received information about an attack being planned against him. In February 2006, Erhan Tuncel informed the police that Yasin Hayal intended to kill Hrant Dink in Constantinople “at any cost.”

On February 17, the Intelligence Department of the Trabzon Police officially forwarded the information in writing to the Constantinople Police, warning of the threat to Dink’s life. However, according to published documents, the necessary measures to ensure his security were not taken, and the Constantinople Police did not respond to the letter.

At the time, Hrant Dink was under intense public and media pressure. Hostile and threatening materials were being published against him, while law enforcement authorities had already been informed of a possible attack.

On February 17, 2006, Dink participated in a discussion organized at Akdeniz University, where the issue of freedom of thought was discussed. The event was also attended by individuals who had previously taken harsh positions against him.

The documents show that information concerning threats against Hrant Dink was available to law enforcement authorities before his assassination. Despite this, sufficient measures were not taken to ensure his protection.

On January 19, 2007, Hrant Dink was assassinated in Constantinople in front of the offices of the Agos newspaper.
