Armenian-American lawyer, international law expert, and member of the Committee for the Protection of the Fundamental Rights of the People of Artsakh, Garnik Kerkonian, states that Armenians are currently in the midst of an ongoing genocidal process.

According to him, the events that took place in Artsakh in 2023 were among the latest stages of that process, while regional developments, including plans concerning Syunik, should be viewed within the same context. Kerkonian notes that the issue is not limited to isolated incidents, but has a long-term and continuous nature.

The lawyer emphasizes that Armenian society often does not perceive separate events as part of one unified process. In his opinion, this perception prevents dangers from being properly assessed on both international and domestic levels.

Kerkonian also refers to historical developments, emphasizing that during the remembrance days of the genocide committed against Armenians of 1915, it is necessary to understand that the chain of violence and displacement has historical continuity. He also mentions the events of the final years of the Ottoman Empire and their impact on regional politics.

According to his assessment, if these processes are not presented as a unified picture on international platforms, the dangers may continue. In this context, he also highlights the issue of the right of return of the people of Artsakh as a priority agenda.

According to Kerkonian, it is necessary to change the approach and, instead of viewing events separately, see the broader historical chain in order to understand the deeper nature of the current situation.
