German historian and University of Haifa professor Stefan Ihrig has spent years studying the historical connections between Germany and the genocide committed against Armenians.
According to his assessment, during the First World War, the German authorities often preferred to preserve their alliance with the Ottoman Empire, while a number of German consuls condemned the violence perpetrated against Armenians. Johannes Lepsius also played an important role by raising awareness in Germany about the plight of Armenians.
Ihrig highlights the 1921 trial of Soghomon Tehlirian, noting that in Germany it developed into an important public discussion about the genocide committed against Armenians. According to him, the impunity surrounding the crimes of 1915 later created a dangerous precedent in the history of genocides.
