According to Armenian bibliography, the first Armenian who participated in the Olympic Games was King Trdat I from the Arshakuni dynasty.

Trdat’s ancestors and their state also included parts of Western Armenia.

Trdat stood out for his physical preparedness

 and sports success, and became the first Armenian Olympic athlete.

Due to the Armenian historian Movses Khorenatsi, the information reached us that Trdat III Arshakuni was the first Armenian to become a champion in the Olympic Games.

Trdat III won the Olympic Games of 281, becoming an integral part of Armenian history.

At the Olympic Games held in Greece in 393, Varazdat, the Armenian king  of Arshakuni, achieved brilliant results by winning the wrestling competition.

His victory was immortalized on a marble slab as the winner of the last Olympic Games, which is a great pride for all Armenians.

Athletes Mkrtich Mkryan and Vahram Papazyan, who represented Western Armenia, participated in the modern Olympic Games in Stockholm in 1912. At the beginning of the 20th century, the first Armenian football clubs were opened in Constantinople and Zmyurnia. In the following years, the process continued, and before the First World War there were about 40 Armenian gymnastics clubs in Constantinople alone.

There was even an idea to create an Armenian league, which was not implemented due to the First World War, as well as the genocide against Armenians, which killed many Armenian sportsmen, and many Armenian clubs were closed.
