Western Armenia (Turkish Armenia) received its first recognition as a state from Russia on December 29, 1917, following the genocide committed against the Armenian people.

After the formation of a government under the leadership of Boghos Nubar on May 15, 1919, the Supreme Council of the Allied Powers de facto recognized the Republic of Armenia as a complete state.

Following the London Conference of February 1920 and the San Remo Conference of April 1920, the Republic of (Western) Armenia received de jure recognition through multiple channels even before the signing of the Treaty of Sèvres on August 10, 1920.

During this period, the United States recognized Armenia on May 11, 1920. However, many do not know that Argentina recognized (Western) Armenia as a free and independent state on May 3, 1920, during the presidency of Hipólito Yrigoyen.

The month of May became symbolic, uniting Argentina and (Western) Armenia as two independent peoples, thanks to the dedication and organization of the Armenian community in Argentina.

On May 3, 1920, President Yrigoyen signed the official decree recognizing the Republic of Armenia, confirmed by Foreign Minister Honorio Pueyrredón, and on May 28, celebratory events were held in the heart of the capital.

On the occasion of the 106th anniversary of Argentina’s recognition of the independence of the Republic of Western Armenia, President Armenag Aprahamian expresses gratitude and congratulations to President Javier Milei, his government, parliament, and senate for the attention shown to that community—the descendants of thousands of genocide survivors whose homeland is Western Armenia.

On this occasion, reference is also made to the resolution of the Argentine Senate of May 5, 1993, which officially honors the victims of the genocide committed in Western Armenia.
